Understanding Family Court Triangulation

Triangulation in family court occurs when three parties create a reinforcing cycle of narratives about a targeted parent:

  • The Aligned Parent: Initiates concerns or allegations (founded or unfounded)
  • The Guardian ad Litem (GAL): Court-appointed attorney who may uncritically accept the aligned parent's narrative
  • The Therapist/Professional: Mental health professional who may confirm concerns based on information from the other two parties

The Trap: Each party references the others as "verification," creating a closed loop where the targeted parent cannot effectively defend themselves. The child's relationship with the targeted parent deteriorates as these narratives become "documented facts" in court records.
